Timothée Chalamet Unlocks the Secret to Going-Out Style

As a daytime off-duty dresser, Timothée Chalamet tends to be a bit of a freewheelin’ wildcard. But when it comes to eveningwear, the actor’s more or less got things down to a science.

Now, you don’t have to be Timmy Chalamet wearing Tom Ford to pull off that sort of confectionery-adjacent sex appeal. His ensemble speaks to a useful wardrobe philosophy introduced to me by my stylist friend Max Weinstein. He has a simple, three-part formula for building a killer going-out look: gloss, sheen, matte. Before you head out the door for the evening, make sure you’re wearing garments that fit each category: one really slick piece to ramp up the volume; something with a slight shine to bring the intrigue; and a final matte element to bring it all back down to earth. In Timmy’s case, he’s got a glossy leather jacket and Chelsea boots, a sheeny silk shirt, and a solid pair of flatly lustrous pants. In other words? It’s a fête-ready outfit perfect for anyone who considers themselves “something of a magician, inventor, and chocolate maker.”

It helps, of course, if he also happens to pull up in an outfit yanked right off the runway—which Chalamet did over the weekend, when he attended a dinner celebrating his new Martin Scorsese-directed commercial for Chanel’s Bleu de Chanel fragrance at Bemelmans Bar on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. For the occasion, he wore a head-to-toe look from the latest Tom Ford collection, designed by the label’s new creative director Peter Hawkings. In standard Tom Ford fashion, Timmy’s tonal outfit was precision-engineered for a night out: a chocolatey brown leather blazer and matching silk shirt; a pair of espresso-hued, slightly iridescent trousers; and patent-croc Chelsea boots. In other words, Chalamet looked like a Wonka Bar that somehow gained sentience and then sauntered its way into Studio 54. (By this same logic, the silvery Tom Ford suit Timothée wore to the Cannes Film Festival a couple years back was like the candy bar’s metallic wrapper.)
